Bringing Your Best Friend to France: What I Learned About Pet Relocation

When I decided to move from California to France, there was one thing I knew without a doubt: my dog Kaya was coming with me. No questions asked. She wasn’t just a pet—she was my best friend, my co-pilot, and my calm in the chaos of planning an international move.

What I didn’t know then? How complicated the process would be.

Between vet visits, paperwork, airline policies, and worrying about Kaya’s safety and comfort, the whole thing felt overwhelming. And while I’d do it all again in a heartbeat, I now know just how many moving parts are involved in bringing a furry companion across the ocean.

If you’re considering relocating to France and you can’t imagine doing it without your pet—I see you, and I’ve got your back. Here’s what I’ve learned (and what I now help others do) when it comes to international pet relocation.

Step 1: Understand the Paperwork (It’s More Than You Think)

France is a pet-friendly country, but it’s also big on regulations. Your pet will need:

  • A microchip (ISO 11784/11785 compliant)
  • A rabies vaccination done after the microchip is implanted
  • An EU health certificate completed by a USDA-accredited vet and endorsed by the USDA within 10 days of travel

I highly recommend starting with the USDA Pet Travel Portal for France. This official site lays out exactly what paperwork you’ll need depending on your timeline and your pet’s vaccination history.

And don’t forget about France’s own rules—France’s Customs Website Here offers helpful info in French and English about what you can and can’t bring (hint: no more than five pets, and no exotic animals!).

Step 2: Airline Rules Aren’t Always Pet-Friendly

Here’s the thing no one tells you: every airline is different, and they all have specific requirements around crate dimensions, weather restrictions, and breed restrictions.

I spent hours digging through fine print, calling customer service, and worrying about whether Kaya would be safe in the cargo hold. For general rules and what to expect, the IATA pet travel guide is a great place to start.

Pro tip: Try to book a direct flight, and avoid peak summer or winter temperatures. If your dog is small enough, in-cabin travel is ideal—but not always possible with international routes. Either way, you’ll want a secure, IATA-approved crate and plenty of time for crate training beforehand.

Step 3: Think Door to Door—Not Just Airport to Airport

Here’s where it gets real: landing in France with your pet is not the end of the journey. You still have customs, transport to your new home, and possibly a few days in temporary housing.

That’s exactly why I started offering door-to-door pet relocation services through Chez Moi Alsace. I’ve lived this experience—and now I help others make the journey smoother, whether as a standalone service or as part of a full relocation package. You get peace of mind, and your pet gets a stress-free ride.

Step 4: Life in France—Now With a Dog!

Once you’re here? It’s actually wonderful. France is wildly dog-friendly. Most cafés, shops, and even public transport welcome dogs with open arms. In Strasbourg, Kaya and I spent hours riding the tram, walking the canals, and lounging at outdoor cafés together.

If you’re worried about where to go, BringFido is a great resource to find pet-friendly hotels, restaurants, and activities across France.

A Little Note About Kaya…

Kaya is no longer with us, but her paw prints are still all over my life—and my business. Helping her move to France is what inspired me to help others bring their pets here too. I know how deeply bonded we are with our animals. They’re not just travel companions—they’re family.

Whether yours is a tail-wagging pup or a curious kitty, they all deserve a safe, comfortable journey and a soft landing in their new home.
